Matthew Marks is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Paul Sietsema in his galleries at 1062 North Orange Grove and 7818 Santa Monica Boulevard. Utilizing a different medium at each stage of his studio process and cycling between physical making and digital image manipulation, Sietsema continues to explore the effects of imagery, form, and material on our understanding of culture and history. To interrogate how value, whether cultural or financial, accumulates or is lost over time, the artist employs found canvases as supports for his series of works depicting torn currencies. In a new type of composition, he has added a paintbrush drenched in red paint atop a found abstraction by an unknown artist. Other paintings feature monochromatic images of vintage rotary telephones coated with poured paint, or a broken vinyl record also doused in paint. The pooled paint that covers these obsolete communication technologies renders them doubly useless, thus foregrounding their status as cultural objects worthy of renewed attention rather than forgotten relics of a rapidly fading past.
