Roberts Projects is pleased to present Betye Saar’s monumental altar assemblage Mojotech (1987) created during her artist residency at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Integrating ritual objects and charms with circuit boards and computer parts, this installation-based work explores the spiritual elements of technology and aesthetic parallels between the natural and modern worlds.

Throughout the exhibition, visitors can participate by leaving offerings at the base of the altar. This process of accumulation is inspired by the tradition of African sculpture, which incorporates various decorative and “power” elements from significant cultural practices.

As one of the figures who pioneered the development of assemblage art, Betye Saar’s (b. 1926, Los Angeles) practice reflects on African American identity, spirituality, and the connectedness between diverse cultures. Her symbolically rich body of work has evolved over time to demonstrate the environmental, cultural, political, racial, technological, and historical context in which it exists.

In celebration of Mojotech’s 37th anniversary, Roberts Projects will host a panel of cultural practitioners, moderated by renowned arts writer Jori Finkel, to discuss the links between gender, art and technology in a conversation open to the public. Also on view will be additional artworks by Saar that demonstrate her longstanding interest in using technological components in her practice.
