Cultivate: Land Technologies, Stories and Dance Traditions
“Cultivate: Land Technologies, Stories and Dance Traditions” is a community-centered event that is steeped in history, curated by choreographer, educator and South Los Angeles native, Bernard Brown. Intentionally held on George Washington Carver Day, honoring the legacy of the agricultural scientist and artist, “Cultivate,” is born of the Ghanaian concept of Sankofa (bringing good things from the past forward with us into our future) and seeks to honor our ancestors, specifically those who tilled the land, through memory work.
Hosted by LA Commons, Brown will guide “Cultivate” participants on a walk through the Historic Leimert Park neighborhood, from Crop Swap LA’s Degnan Microfarm to the Plant Chica, interacting with local flora, engaging in mindful movement and ultimately experiencing a dance performance, based in contemporary and traditional Africanist movement with live drum accompaniment. “Cultivate” is focused on a return to technologies of the land, technologies of our ancestors, and technologies of embodiment and storytelling.
Walk starts at 9:30AM at Crop Swap LA, 3753 Degnan Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90018
Dance performance starts at 12PM at Plant Chica, 4311 Degnan Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90018
Presented by LA Commons' We Are the Harvest, a PST ART: Art & Science Collide community hub.
