A Curatorial Perspective on Two Objects

These two works are exemplary of Eliasson’s career-long exploration of light and color, geometry, and ecological awareness. MOCA's exhibition will present these works alongside a series of large-scale optical devices designed specifically for The Geffen will reflect on the building's architectural nuances, as well as the atmosphere of Los Angeles. Visitors will encounter a dazzling range of patterns, colors, and materials that harness the laws of geometric optics to address feelings of embodiment, perception, and shared experience.

Discussion Questions

  • Discuss art’s capacity to disorient and defamiliarize. How can art encourage us to question our perspective?
  • How can art heighten our sensory experience of light and color? What are the physical and psychological effects of light and color on a viewer?
  • What strategies can artists use to slow down the experience of looking, making us more attentive to our body and the space around us?
