Helen and Newton Harrison's iconic work, which was last on view at the Geffen Contemporary at the MOCA in 2012, opens in the main gallery of the Los Angeles location as a large-scale installation featuring a raised dirt-filled wooden planter with hog pasture mix and a grow light fixture hovering just above. The living work grows lush green grasses to be grazed by a live pig visiting Various Small Fires periodically. Alongside the installation, trills of crickets and the fragrant aroma of pasture accompany the viewer as they move through the gallery to observe the delicately designed indoor work. Survival Piece #1 opens on September 14, 2024, with a public reception from 6-8 pm.
