Lock/Unlock is an exhibit seeking to unpick the past, present and future states of security, privacy and protection. From the first known examples of cryptology dating back to 1,900 BC, the intricate workings of early crafted analog lock and key mechanisms, through to the present systems of cybersecurity, encryption and biometric authentication, society continues to grapple with addressing the question of what is worthy of protecting and how to do it. The participating artists, engineers, coders and historians of Lock/Unlock address the roles of authenticity, machine learning, quantum computing, ransomware, hacking and more within a certain future of ever deepening complexity.
