Channing Hansen’s (b. 1972, Los Angeles) work merges craft, science, and technology. In a labor-intensive process, Hansen washes, dyes, and spins wool from heritage breed sheep to create vibrant hand-knitted textiles mounted on stretchers. The abstract compositions in Hansen’s work are sourced from computer-generated algorithms. For this series, Cosmic Fabric Hansen uses data measuring cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), the residual electromagnetic radiation from the Big Bang. The artist defines CMBR as, “the residual heat of creation...the afterglow of the Big Bang, the static in between radio stations and the snow of a TV tuned to a dead channel.”
