Lightscape is a new major work by Doug Aitken, a groundbreaking cinematic experience, offering a hallucinatory journey through the modern world. Created in collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Los Angeles Master Chorale, it reimagines the boundaries of filmmaking. It will be premiered through an immersive 7-screen installation at Marciano Art Foundation.
The story of Lightscape unfolds as interconnected, dreamlike vignettes, abandoning traditional dialogue and structure. It's anchored by music from Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Meredith Monk, and original compositions by Doug Aitken. Traversing the landscapes of the American West, from deserts to tech hubs, we encounter a diverse set of characters like Natasha Lyonne, LA Dance Project, Beck, Bjarki, and surf cumbia band La Lom.
The installation will be accompanied by weekly live musical performances and activations. These will include programming and performances by the LA Philharmonic, LA Master Chorale, and a diverse range of musicians who will improvise to the artwork.
